Microsoft org chart options compared
SmartArt, Excel, and Visio each solve a different problem. When a lightweight browser tool is enough — and when to stay in Office.
“Microsoft org chart” usually means SmartArt in PowerPoint, the Excel org add-in, or Visio for anything larger. All three assume you live in Office and are willing to maintain the diagram yourself.
SmartArt in PowerPoint

Excel
Good for the data (names + managers). Weak for the picture. Export CSV and import when you need layout without redrawing.
Visio
The right tool when you already use it for other diagrams, have templates, and need Microsoft-ecosystem compliance. Overkill for a one-off company chart.
Simple Org Chart as a lighter option
Browser editor, automatic layout, CSV in, PNG out — insert into Word, PowerPoint, or Teams. Does not replace Visio for non-org diagrams. Does not sync with Active Directory.
Reasonable when you need a chart this week, not a diagramming standard forever.
