Google org chart options compared
Sheets, Drawings, Charts API, or a dedicated tool — what each Google approach is good for, and where a simple browser editor fits.
Searching “Google org chart” usually means you want something quick inside Workspace — not necessarily Google’s product specifically. Here are the routes people actually use, honestly compared.
Google Sheets (list + optional chart)
Two columns — employee and manager — mirror how HR data is often stored. Sortable, shareable, version history built in.
Good for: maintaining the roster. Weak for: seeing the hierarchy at a glance — the org chart chart type caps out around ~20 nodes and gets unreadable fast.
Natural next step: export CSV and import into a layout tool when you need the picture.
Google Drawings
Manual boxes and connectors inside Drive. Total control, zero automation — you are the layout engine.
Good for: one static diagram with custom styling. Weak for: anything that changes more than once a quarter.
Google Charts / Apps Script
Developers can render org charts from data programmatically. Flexible if you already have an engineer and a canonical data source.
Good for: embedding live charts in internal tools. Weak for: one-off HR tasks — setup time dominates.
Dedicated org chart software
Tools built for reporting lines: automatic layout, drag-to-reparent, import/export. Trade-off is another tab (or subscription) outside Google.
Simple Org Chart is the lightweight end — browser editor, CSV in, PNG out, no Google account required to edit. It does not sync live with Sheets; you re-export CSV when data changes.
Where Simple Org Chart fits
If you need real-time sync with Google Workspace identity and permissions, stay in Sheets or buy an HRIS with org views. If you need a chart for next week’s presentation, import → adjust → export is usually enough.
Walkthrough: create a chart · CSV import · export for Slides
- You have (or can make) a CSV from Sheets.
- You need a clean diagram for Slides, Docs, or email — not a live embedded widget.
- You want to tweak reporting lines by dragging without redrawing connectors.
- You do not need HR system integration.
Try the import → export path
Keep names in Sheets; import CSV when you need the diagram.
